IA vs. AI: Why Independent Artists, Human Sweat, and Creative Community Matter More Than Ever
Four years ago, I was wrapping up another corporate production at REV Studios with our lead wardrobe and hair/makeup artist, Natalie Bohlin. After endless shoots focused on clean, natural, corporate looks, I turned to her and casually asked: “Would it be fun to do a Day of the Dead concept shoot for our monthly newsletter?”
She immediately jumped on board.
Four years later, what started as a casual idea for a newsletter feature has spiraled into an annual Halloween tradition where we bring more and more incredible talent into our crazy ideas. We have gone from Day of the Dead to a gritty Zombie set, a stylized 1950s Witch, and yesterday, a full Retro Alien production complete with gelled lighting rigs, vintage props, and stunning practical hair and makeup art.
It keeps getting bigger, better, and more rewarding every single year.
In an era dominated by Artificial Intelligence, where a simple prompt can generate a hyper-realistic image in seconds, it is fair to ask: Why spend weeks planning, sourcing wardrobe, building sets, and gathering a crew of artists just to create a visual concept?
The answer lies in a simple mindset: IA over AI. Independent Artists over Artificial Intelligence.
The Efficiency Trap: What AI Replaces (and What It Can’t)
AI is a remarkable tool for speeding up workflows, generating mood boards, and streamlining concepts. But AI operates entirely in hindsight, stitching together existing data patterns and predictable averages.
What generative software cannot replicate is the obsession, trial, and tactile detail that real artists pour into their craft.
Take Natalie’s work on yesterday’s Retro Alien shoot:
- The Late-Night Formulations: Because most of her client work demands natural makeup, Natalie used this shoot to push her creative boundaries. She spent days consulting with Dezi, experimenting with skin formulations, obsessively tweaking color ratios until late the night before the shoot just to get the exact shade of retro teal to work.
- The Custom Detailing: She hand-dipped individual eyelash extensions into star glitters to give our model’s gaze an otherworldly cosmic sparkle.
- The Real-Time Adaptation: She pulled entire racks of wardrobe options, vintage jewelry, shoes, and distinct wig options so our team could adapt and improvise live on set.
When you see that level of care in a finished image, you are not looking at an algorithm output. You are looking at human passion.
1. Stretching Creative Muscles Beyond Commercial Rules
Test shoots do not pay the bills directly, but they do something far more important: they force us to grow.
When executing client briefs, we deliver someone else’s vision under clear constraints. Annual projects like our Halloween shoot serve as an incubator for REV Studios. They give artists like Natalie, our crew, and me room to break out of routine, test radical setups, push lighting boundaries, and experiment without commercial pressure.
Stretching your creative limits keeps your artistic identity alive.
2. The Power of Collaboration
No single person could have pulled off our Retro Alien shoot alone. It required an ensemble of dedicated talent:
- Natalie Bohlin & Dezi Villalpando treating skin like a physical canvas and crafting star-lit eyes.
- Stage and Screen FX providing elite makeup supplies and specialty beauty FX materials.
- Lowell Tindell shaping atmosphere and gelled shadows through lighting design.
- Mark Peery capturing every subtle texture on camera.
- Terrapin Velloso bringing the alien character to life under heavy lights and wardrobe.
- Shamon Freitas supporting the talent that made the frame move.
When independent artists collaborate, the end result is exponential. Every person brings their lived experience, technical quirks, and personal taste to the table.
3. Building Community as a Competitive Advantage
The creative industry can feel isolating when digital tools encourage us to sit behind screens in siloes.
Projects like our annual Halloween shoot exist to build community. They connect local talent, build deep trust across departments, and give commercial artists space to remember why they fell in love with their craft in the first place. When client season hits, that trust translates directly into smoother productions and better work for REV Studios.
Community is not just a feel-good bonus. It is the backbone of a sustainable creative career.
Looking Ahead
As AI continues to change how visual media is made, human artistry will not be replaced. It will be re-valued. Audiences and clients are developing an eye for the difference between generated content and genuine human effort. They want the story, the late-night prep, the hand-dipped star lashes, and the passion behind the lens.
To every photographer, makeup artist, model, stylist, and technician who has joined our crazy Halloween test shoots over the last four years: thank you.
Here is to the independent artists keeping real creativity alive.
